The 19th Century was the Golden Age of natural history books, reflecting the explosion of knowledge in all scientific fields. The study of butterflies (lepidoptery) seems to have fascinated the Victorians, and several authoritative butterfly books were published in this period. We are currently offering hand-colored, lithographic prints from two important works. The first are prints from Henry Noel Humphrey's British Butterflies and Their Transformations, published in London in 1841. Transformations was the first definitive work published exclusively on British butterflies. Our second group of prints comes from later in the century, from W. F. Kirby's European Butterflies and Moths, published in London in 1882. Prints from both books feature glorious hand color, and show butterflies in various life stages against backgrounds that often include detailed, precise plant life.
