Very well-detailed, pre-Civil War map of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with a good-sized inset plan of Boston, published in 1857. A striking, attractive map by one of the best American mapmakers of the 19th century, J. H. Colton. Lots of topographical detail, including hand-colored counties, cities, towns, mountains, rivers, lakes, railroads, coastal features, and more. Also shows nice detail on Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard. A little browning in the margins, but the image area is clean and bright, with decorative scroll border. Printed text on verso (back). Very good condition overall.
