John G. Keulemans was a Dutch painter, illustrator, and lithographer, and is renowned as one of the best bird illustrators of the 19th century. He spent most of his life in London, where he illustrated, among other works, the 27 volume Catalogue of the Birds in the British Museum. The prints offered here, on quarto-sized sheets, are Keuleman's illustrations for H. E. Dresser's History of the Birds of Europe, published between 1871 and 1881. Dresser was a businessman and a leading ornithologist, who published numerous articles on ornithology in addition to Birds of Europe. The plates from Birds of Europe are hand-colored lithographs, and are increasingly sought-after as examples of Keulemans' skill and artistry.
